Everything you need to get the most out of your Nexus Pen and Donna AI.
Getting Started
- Remove your Nexus Pen from the packaging and charge it fully via the magnetic USB-C port (approximately 90 minutes).
- Download the Nexus Pen app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and tap Connect New Pen.
- Press and hold Button A on your pen for 3 seconds until the OLED displays "PAIRING..."
- Select Nexus Pen Donna from the Bluetooth list in the app.
- Log in or create your Nexus Pen account to activate Donna AI.
Your Nexus Pen uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to connect to the app. To pair:
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone.
- Hold Button A for 3 seconds — the OLED will show "PAIRING..."
- Open the Nexus Pen app and tap Connect. Your pen will appear as "Nexus Pen Donna".
- Tap to connect. The OLED will confirm with "CONNECTED".
The pen remembers your phone — future connections are automatic when both devices are in range.
Once connected:
- Press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button on the pen.
- Speak your question clearly into the pen's microphone.
- Release the button. Donna will process your request and stream the response to the OLED display and through the pen's speaker.
Try asking: "Donna, what is photosynthesis?" or "Donna, help me write an introduction for my essay."
Your Nexus Pen has four controls:
- PTT Button — Hold to record your voice, release to send to Donna.
- Button A — Hold 3 sec to enter pairing mode. Single press: navigate menu up / confirm.
- Button B — Navigate menu / scroll responses.
- Button C — Open settings / back.
The OLED display shows Donna's responses, AI mode, connection status, and battery level.
Using Donna AI
Donna AI includes five specialized modes. Switch via the app or the settings menu on the pen:
- Learn Mode — Socratic homework help. Donna guides you to the answer rather than giving it directly.
- Creative Mode — Writing, brainstorming, storytelling, and creative projects.
- Research Mode — Deep-dive analysis, summaries, and citations.
- Answer Now Mode — Instant factual answers with no back-and-forth.
- Language Mode — Spanish learning, translation, and pronunciation help.
Pro subscribers can also create custom modes tailored to specific subjects or workflows.
You can control Donna hands-free using voice commands. Supported commands:
- "Donna, mute volume" — Silences audio output.
- "Donna, max volume" — Sets volume to maximum.
- "Donna, raise volume" — Increases volume one step.
- "Donna, lower volume" — Decreases volume one step.
More voice commands are added with each firmware update. Check the Firmware Changelog for the latest additions.
Donna automatically scrolls long responses across the OLED display. You can also:
- Press Button B to manually scroll forward through a response.
- Press Button A to replay a response from the beginning.
Full responses are always visible in the Nexus Pen app's conversation history, so you never miss a detail.
Custom modes are available to Pro subscribers:
- Open the Nexus Pen app and go to Settings → AI Modes → Create Custom Mode.
- Give your mode a name (e.g., "SAT Prep" or "Physics Tutor").
- Write a system prompt that describes how Donna should behave in this mode.
- Save and sync to your pen.

Troubleshooting
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and you are within 10 feet of the pen.
- Close the Nexus Pen app completely and reopen it.
- On the pen, hold Button A for 3 seconds to re-enter pairing mode.
- If the pen still doesn't appear, go to your phone's Bluetooth settings, forget "Nexus Pen Donna", then re-pair from scratch.
- Try restarting both your phone and the pen (hold Button C for 5 seconds to power cycle).
- Check that volume is not muted — say "Donna, max volume" or adjust in Settings → Volume on the pen.
- Ensure the pen is connected (OLED shows connection status).
- Check that audio is enabled in the app under Settings → Audio Output.
- Perform a firmware update — audio improvements are included in every release.
- If the speaker still produces no sound after all the above, contact support.
- The OLED dims after 30 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery — press any button to wake it.
- If the display is completely unresponsive, power cycle the pen by holding Button C for 5 seconds.
- Ensure the pen has sufficient charge (below 5% the display may go dark to protect battery).
- A firmware update may resolve display initialisation issues. See the Changelog.
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Ensure you are running the latest version of the app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Restart your phone.
- If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall the app (your account data is stored in the cloud and will not be lost).
- Contact NexuspenLLC@gmail.com with your device model and OS version so our team can investigate.
WiFi Setup
WiFi provisioning is done through the app:
- Open the Nexus Pen app and ensure your pen is connected via BLE.
- Go to Settings → WiFi Setup.
- Tap Scan for Networks. The app will display available WiFi networks in range of your pen.
- Select your network and enter the password.
- Tap Connect. The pen will confirm on the OLED: "WIFI OK".
WiFi enables faster response times and firmware OTA updates without requiring a phone connection.
- Double-check your WiFi password — passwords are case-sensitive.
- Ensure your router supports 2.4GHz. The Nexus Pen does not support 5GHz networks.
- Move closer to your router during setup.
- Restart the pen and retry provisioning from the app.
- If using a school or enterprise network with MAC filtering, your network admin must whitelist the pen's MAC address (shown in Settings → About).
Yes. Once your pen is connected to WiFi, firmware updates can be pushed automatically. When a new firmware version is available:
- The OLED will display "UPDATE AVAILABLE".
- Press Button A to begin the update. Keep the pen charged during the update.
- The update takes approximately 2 minutes. Do not power off the pen during this process.
- The pen will reboot automatically when the update is complete.
