Nexus Pen Unboxing: What to Expect When Your Pen Arrives

Chase Coe   March 29, 2026   5 min read

The moment your Nexus Pen order ships, something shifts. You find yourself checking the tracking page a few more times than you probably need to. When the package finally lands on your doorstep, you want to know exactly what's inside — and what to do first. We walked through the full unboxing so you don't have to guess.

The Box Itself

Nexus Pen ships in a compact matte black box — roughly the size of a hardcover novel. The lid lifts cleanly off a magnetic closure. On the outside, a gold foil "NEXUS" wordmark sits centered on the top panel. It looks like it belongs next to an Apple product, and that's intentional. First impressions matter, and we wanted the experience to feel premium before you even see the pen.

Inside the lid, a simple card reads: "Welcome to Nexus Pen. Your AI assistant is ready."

What's in the Box

Here's a full list of everything included:

  • Nexus Pen Donna — The pen itself, matte black barrel with gold "NEXUS" branding, 1.3" OLED display, three tactile side buttons, and a premium erasable ink cartridge pre-installed
  • USB-C Charging Cable — Short-form (30cm) braided cable designed for desk use. Charges to full in under 45 minutes
  • Extra Ink Cartridge — One spare erasable ink refill so you're not caught short at a critical moment
  • Quick Start Card — A double-sided card with the app download QR code, the pairing sequence, and your first three Donna commands to try
  • Tip Sheet — Five suggested questions for each of Donna's five modes, printed in gold on black card stock

First Impressions of the Pen

The pen is lighter than most people expect. At 18 grams it sits comfortably in your hand for long writing sessions without fatigue. The barrel has a slight texture that prevents slipping, and the three side buttons have a satisfying tactile click — not cheap or mushy.

The 1.3-inch OLED screen powers on immediately when you press the center button. You'll see the Nexus Pen logo, then a Bluetooth pairing screen. The display is surprisingly bright and readable even in well-lit rooms. Text responses from Donna scroll smoothly across it in the brand's signature gold-on-black palette.

The ink tip writes exactly like a quality ballpoint. There's no learning curve, no adjustment period. Pick it up and write — it works.

Setting Up for the First Time

Setup takes about three minutes:

  1. Download the Nexus Pen app — Available on iOS and Android. Scan the QR code on the Quick Start Card or search "Nexus Pen" in your app store
  2. Create your account — Enter your email, set a password, and choose your plan (Free, Plus, or Pro)
  3. Pair via Bluetooth — Hold the center button on the pen for three seconds until the display shows "Pairing..." then tap "Connect" in the app. Done
  4. Charge if needed — The pen ships with about 80% battery. You can start using it immediately or top it off while you explore the app

Your First Conversation with Donna

Once paired, press and hold the push-to-talk button on the pen — the bottom of the three side buttons — and ask anything. Donna responds through the built-in speaker within a couple of seconds. You'll hear a clear, natural voice and simultaneously watch her response scroll across the OLED screen.

For most people, the first question is something like "What can you do?" Donna will walk you through her five modes: Answer, School, Research, Creative, and Language. Each one is purpose-built for a different type of question — and switching between them is as simple as saying "Switch to School mode" or tapping through the display menu.

One Thing That Surprises Everyone

The audio quality. Most people aren't expecting much from a pen-sized speaker, but the MAX98357A amplifier and Dayton Audio driver deliver genuinely impressive sound at full volume. Donna's voice is clear, warm, and present. In a quiet room it carries comfortably without being tinny or distorted. In a noisy study hall you might want earbuds — but for desk use, the built-in speaker is more than enough.

Ready to Go

From opening the box to your first real conversation with Donna, you're looking at under five minutes. The experience is designed to have zero friction — because we know the moment you actually use the pen for something real, whether that's a tricky chemistry question or a creative writing prompt, you'll understand immediately what Nexus Pen is for.

The box is the beginning. The pen is the point.
