Most educational technology assumes a student who can read quickly, type accurately, and sit still with a screen. Students who can't do one of those things spend a lot of energy working around tools that weren't built with them in mind.
Voice interfaces change some of that. Not all of it, and it's worth being specific about which parts.
Reading speed and dyslexia
A student with dyslexia can usually understand material at grade level or above. The bottleneck is decoding text, not comprehension. When the answer to a question can be spoken aloud instead of read, that bottleneck is bypassed entirely.
This isn't a fix for dyslexia and it doesn't replace reading instruction. But for the specific act of getting a quick answer during class, being able to hear it rather than read it removes a step that costs some students real time and energy.

Writing and motor difficulty
For students with dysgraphia or motor impairments, the physical act of writing is slow and tiring. That doesn't change with an AI pen, and it would be dishonest to suggest it does, it's still a pen you hold.
Where it helps is narrower: not having to also operate a phone or laptop to look something up. One object in your hand instead of two.
Attention and single-purpose devices
A phone is a general-purpose device that is actively designed to capture attention. For students with ADHD, "look something up on your phone" frequently becomes something else entirely, and the cost of that isn't a character flaw, it's a predictable result of how the device is built.
A device that only answers questions cannot show you a notification. That constraint helps some students substantially. It's also the least discussed accessibility property of dedicated hardware, because it doesn't look like an accessibility feature.
Language learners
Students learning in a second language often understand the material and lose points on vocabulary. Asking what a term means, in the moment, without announcing to the room that you didn't know it, matters more than it sounds.

Where a phone is not an option
Some classrooms ban phones outright. Some students have device restrictions at home. Assistive technology that only works if you're allowed to hold a phone isn't available to everyone, and a pen is permitted essentially everywhere a pen is.
What this doesn't do
Honesty here matters more than a longer list.
An AI pen is not a screen reader, and doesn't replace one. It's not a substitute for an IEP, a 504 plan, or accommodations a student is entitled to. It doesn't help with blindness or low vision, the display is small and there's no braille output. It doesn't transcribe lectures. It doesn't digitize handwriting.
It's a device that answers spoken questions and can speak the answer back. That's a narrow capability. For some students that narrow capability removes a real daily obstacle, and for others it does nothing at all.
Anyone claiming an AI pen is an accessibility solution is overselling it. The accurate version is that voice-first interfaces remove one specific barrier, the requirement to read and type to get information, and that barrier is a real one for a lot of students.
