How Donna AI Makes Learning Interactive

Most AI tools give you the answer. Donna helps you understand it.

When we built Donna — the AI assistant that powers Nexus Pen — we didn't just want another chatbot. We wanted an AI that could teach. One that adapts to how you learn, meets you where you are, and helps you build real understanding rather than just handing over solutions.

The Problem with "Just Google It"

Students today have more information available than any generation in history. But access to information isn't the same as understanding. When you're stuck on a calculus problem at 11 PM, Googling the answer doesn't teach you why the derivative works that way. Copying from Wolfram Alpha doesn't build intuition.

Donna takes a different approach.

How Donna's Learning Mode Works

When you ask Donna a question in learning mode, she doesn't just spit out the answer. She breaks the problem down:

  • Step-by-step guidance — Donna walks you through the reasoning, not just the result
  • Adaptive difficulty — She adjusts her explanations based on your level. A middle schooler asking about fractions gets a different response than a college student asking about integrals
  • Socratic questioning — Instead of telling you the answer, Donna sometimes asks you a question back to guide your thinking
  • Multi-subject support — Math, science, history, language arts, foreign languages — Donna covers the full curriculum

Real-World Use Cases

In the Classroom

A student is taking notes during a biology lecture. The teacher mentions "mitochondrial DNA inheritance" and moves on. The student presses the talk button and whispers, "Donna, explain mitochondrial DNA." Within seconds, a clear, concise explanation appears on the OLED screen — and Donna speaks it quietly through the pen's speaker if they're using earbuds.

During Homework

Working through a physics problem set, a student gets stuck on projectile motion. Instead of switching to their laptop and falling down a YouTube rabbit hole, they ask Donna. She identifies where they went wrong, explains the concept, and suggests a similar practice problem.

Study Sessions

Before an exam, a student asks Donna to quiz them on key vocabulary. Donna generates flashcard-style questions, tracks which terms the student struggles with, and focuses review time on weak areas.

Privacy First

We know that students — especially younger ones — need strong privacy protections. Donna doesn't store personal data. Conversations are processed in real time and not used for training. Parents and schools can configure content filters and usage limits through the Nexus Pen app.

The Future of AI in Education

We believe AI should be a tutor, not a crutch. Donna is designed to make students smarter — not to do their work for them. Every interaction is an opportunity to learn, and that philosophy is baked into every response Donna gives.

The pen is mightier than the sword. With Donna, it's also smarter than a search engine.
