An AI pen is a writing instrument with a voice assistant and a display built into it. You ask a question out loud, and the answer appears on the pen itself. You never open an app, and you never take out your phone.
That last part is the entire reason the category exists.
Why not just use your phone?
Because in the two places people most need a quick answer, a classroom and a meeting, taking out a phone is either against the rules or reads as rude. The information problem is solved. The access problem isn't.

What separates an AI pen from a smart pen
They get confused constantly, and they're different products.
Smart pens (Livescribe, Neo, Moleskine) digitize handwriting. They record strokes on special paper or with an infrared camera and sync to your phone. The pen captures; the intelligence lives in an app afterward.
Styluses (Apple Pencil, S Pen) are input devices for a screen. Without the tablet they do nothing.
AI pens answer questions. The pen is the interface, not a capture device for something else. You speak, it thinks, it shows you the answer on its own screen.

How an AI pen actually works
Four steps, and understanding them tells you where the real engineering difficulty is.
1. Capture. A microphone picks up your question, usually behind a push-to-talk button. Always-on listening drains battery and creates a privacy problem nobody wants in a classroom, so most designs make you press something deliberately.
2. Transmit. The pen sends audio over Bluetooth Low Energy to a phone, which relays it to a server. The pen itself doesn't have the compute to run a language model, nothing pen-sized does, and won't for a while.
3. Process. Speech becomes text, a model generates an answer, and the answer comes back, often as both text and synthesized speech.
4. Display. The answer renders on a small screen in the barrel, and optionally plays through a speaker.
The hard part is not the AI. It's step 2 and step 4. Getting audio across BLE at a usable sample rate without stutter, and rendering readable text on a display a few millimeters wide, are the constraints that actually shape the product. Most of the engineering time goes there.
What to look for
Does it still write? A surprising number of concepts forget this. If it doesn't take a real ink cartridge, it isn't a pen, it's a gadget shaped like one.
Push-to-talk or always-listening? Push-to-talk is better for battery and much better for anywhere with privacy expectations.
Is the display readable at arm's length? A screen you have to squint at defeats the purpose.
Does it have modes? A single general-purpose assistant is worse than one that knows whether you're doing homework, drafting, or practicing a language. The framing changes the answer quality substantially.
Is there a policy for younger users? If students under 13 will use it, the product is subject to COPPA in the US, which requires verifiable parental consent. A product without a consent flow either hasn't thought about it or isn't intended for school.
Who they're actually for
Students, mostly, where phone restrictions are real and the questions are constant. Then professionals in meetings, where reaching for a phone signals disengagement even when you're looking something up relevant to the discussion. Then language learners, who benefit from asking about a word in the moment rather than three hours later.
If you're at a desk with a laptop open, you don't need one. The category exists for the times you aren't.
Where the category is going
The interesting question isn't whether pens get smarter. It's whether the display stays. A screen is the expensive, power-hungry, mechanically awkward part of a pen-sized device. The alternative, audio-only, is cheaper and simpler, but it forces you to listen to a paragraph you could have read in three seconds.
Screens are winning for now, because reading is faster than listening and quieter in a room full of people.
